Goodie Bag: Ponzi Vino Gelato

I don’t know if it’s the Moscato I enjoyed in Napa Valley, or the sweet tooth I developed after eating through three bags of Halloween candy, but I’m in love with dessert wines. And this month I’m lusting after Ponzi Vino Gelato 2005.

My friend Nicole introduced me to it, and her friend, Leslie, a sommelier (that’s the kind of friend I need!), recommended it to her.  It reminded me of a mimosa, just smoother and sweeter.  Oh, and no pulp.  (Can you tell I’m not a sommelier?)

It’s an ice wine, which makes it a bit pricier.  With good reason.  It’s made from grapes frozen on the vine.  And since the water inside the grapes is frozen into ice crystals, it doesn’t dilute the juice (or sugars, giving it its sweet flavor).  Because so little water mixes with the juice, you need to press a lot more grapes to produce one bottle of ice wine, hence the cost.

And what an adorable bottle it is.  Nicole, the sweetheart that she is, left me a bottle to uncork at my leisure.

Life is slowing down here on Wednesday, so Matt and I may turn on some jazz and uncork it then.  And I’ll be sure to prepare a nice meal to lead up to the finish.
