I wrote a book about our first year of marriage, and, upon finishing it, congratulated myself. How nice, I thought, to get our problems solved now so we can spend the next fifty years enjoying each other.
What I realize now is that the problems are never solved. What matters is your process. And it’s hard to have a process when you’re constantly negotiating with three curious children at your feet.
How interesting. Every time I ring the doorbell, the dog barks.
Some nights it doesn’t matter how you get to the dinner table; some nights, what matters is that you are there.
Because we all evolve over time. It’s easy to lose sight of each other.

A night alone with my husband? Well, it’s cold and snowy here…wink, wink!
Getting take out so I have a break from recipe developing.
Wow – a date night with my husband would be fantastic. We’re the proud parents of a very cute 6 month old boy (our first) and couple time has been a bit scarce. We’d splurge for a babysitter, and just enjoy the evening together!
The perfect night in? A bottle of wine (or 2), great food, and deck of cards. That’s how I told my husband we were expecting our second. Well, minus the bottle of wine. So… The perfect night in involves great food and a deck of cards.
You’re putting my giveaways to shame. My SO and I stay in often, but it would be nice to just heat up a bag of dinner every once in a while.
First, cocktails. Then something tasty and decadent to eat. (That could mean delivery pizza, or maybe we’d cook. All depends.) After dinner, snuggling by the fire and watching a movie while the dog naps on our laps…
Kids asleep (check). Start the evening off with a nice gin martini, extra olive for me. On to a beautiful meal made by hubby extraordinaire (perhaps an old favorite like lamb chops with mint chutney or a cracked dungenous crab with Rick’s awesome caesar… but often a new and fabulous dish that has us ooo-ing and aww-ing with every bite). Onto a second bottle of wine, fire lit, we play music for one another (long lost favorites, new favorites, always ending with some sexy groove like Theivery Corporation or Dub Tribe). Some sexy dancing to the beats. A glass or two of a brown-sugary single malt on the rocks and it’s love sweet love!
Usually I will cook a nice homey meal and a pot of hot tea. We will then watch a movie together.
Wow, what an amazing prize package! My husband and I don’t get out as often as we used to, with a toddler at home and another on the way soon. But we recently started a little Blu-Ray movie night once a week. It’s kind of a relief to watch anything together besides Dora the Explorer
This time of year, a quiet night with the fireplace blazing, a glass or two of vino and just appetizers would be perfect!
I’d love a night in where I didn’t have to worry about what to make for dinner. I love to cook, but sometimes I just want to come home, relax, and not have to stand in the kitchen. I’d make Brian make the Bertoli, pop open that bottle of wine, and we could snuggle on the couch and watch a good movie.

I guess we’re not terribly original. But a night at home without the child, for us, always revolves around good food (often Japanese takeout) and television (last season’s series on DVD… Weeds, Lost, Friday Night Lights, Entourage, Big Love… whatever is currently out). Although on a rare occasion, I will snuggle up with a good book or knit while my husband plays a video game or sometimes I’ll just watch him play. Reminds me of when we first started dating.
My perfect night in with my husband, would be a great meal, a glass of wine and conversation. Some nights go by without a single conversation between the two of us, that isn’t related to our kids!
First we would pour some wine, then sit and stare at each other, finally busting into gales of laughter. With 5 children all on the go, we don’t get a lot of alone time. We live by the motto “divide and conquer” when it comes to getting our children to where they need to go. We cherish the evenings we have no place to go and just enjoy all being home at dinner together to catch up and enjoy one another’s company and a good meal. It doesn’t happen often enough, but we definitely treasure the time when it does.
On the rare occasion where I get a “night in” with my honey I would cook a fabulous dinner, set the table with the china and glassware we received for wedding gifts (and never take out anymore now that we have a child), light a fire in the fireplace and enjoy a leasurely dinner where we taste each bite of our food instead of inhaling it and enjoy each sip of wine we take. And the icing on the cake would be the ability to have an adult conversation without interuption. Ahhh.
I have plenty of nice dinners for myself. I just need to find that significant other. Better yet, he can cook for both of us.
Well, I’m a widow, so my “significant other” at this point is my eight year old son! We are so often on the go, that we (mother and son) cherish mornings we can stay in our footie pjs (both purchased in the boy’s department!), make crepes drenched in real maple syrup, and sit on our “snuggle chair” playing Scrabble online with my friends around the country.
I don’t have a significant other…but let’s just say God is mine.
I like to just bitch to him about what is wrong in my life…and then, I listen to what He has to say to me…through the bible…and He changes my perspective!
Sex, sex and more sex of course. Hopefully he can still get it up for the third time!
Seriously, though, being pampered by him would be a perfect night of staying in – a fire, some dinner and a vodka martini!
Stay in and have dinner in bed while watching a movie.
Have a nice homecooked meal, crank up the fireplace, watch a good movie, sit in the hot tub, enjoy a nice warm bed! Loving it ; )
We would give eachother foot massages, drink some wine, eat some yummy home cooked food (not all at once of course
. Maybe watch a romantic movie, “500 days of summer”, pop some popcorn, cuddle up with a blanket and enjoy eachother’s company.
A nice fire in the fireplace, a glass of wine, homemade dinner and music throughout the house.
A night with my significant other would include some wine, a great movie, candles lit, and of course, the boys staying with grandma!
We have LOTS of nights in these days, though we were just discussing how much we’re looking forward to a calm Christmas Eve in – and alone (so excited!). Wood stove burning, a prime rib roast (it’s a holiday, even financially embarrassed people have to splurge from time to time!), some Brunello or Barolo that’s been stashed for just such a special occasion, and Cat Power playing in the background. I cannot wait!
popcorn {from the Whirley Pop!}, wine and a good flick. and kids sound asleep for the *whole* night…
Spend a couple hours cooking a big dinner together. Then, after all that hard work, open a bottle of wine, put on a nice dvd, and enjoy the yummy food.
Sleep.
I’m in fact getting ready for “date night” tonight! Ideal…
A soak in the tub and some down time before date night starts. Did I mention that the kids are already at Grandma’s?
Next – Dress in something that makes me feel beautiful.
Drinks and appetizers at a fun, swanky lounge.
Dinner at a fun restaurant.
Come home, light a fire, candles and play some music together.
Go upstairs… = Perfection!
A great nice together with my husband would include music from our wedding, candlelight, a wonderful bottle of wine, and TV/blackberry/cell phones/etc all turned off!
Let’s see. The kids are probably staying at friend’s houses. We have great music in the background, no television during a delightful dinner we cook together, trying a new recipe, we enjoy the wine, some conversation, specifically not talking about kids or work but other things as if we’re dating. Perhaps rent a movie, a period piece or offbeat comedy not appreciated by the kids. Depending when kids come home a bubble bath not out of the question. Overall a chance to slow down and reconnect and let the daily issues fade away.
I think a wonderful evening with the significant other would be to curl up on the couch together, with the dog, and watch the old The Walton’s Christmas special. We could say things like “Remember him? Didn’t he die?” and roll our eyes at the more schmaltzy scenes. We could get all quiet during the sad scenes. There would need to be a tray of attractive and tidy snacks not made by me and a bottle of a fruity, easy to drink wine. We would have to have a throw large enough to cover both of us and the nether end of the dog which is the end that gets chilled in my drafty living room. We would raise our wine glasses and toast the screen when the Walton’s mother inveighs against the evils of “the recipe,” that local hooch made by the spinster sisters.
Big ups to Bertolli AND Ogilvy! They are the best and some really nice, genuine folks at that. Wooooo! A great night in would include easy dinner, even if it’s just homemade pizza, red wine and lots of bad TV. Bad reality TV.
Maybe this is past the 12 am cut off based on where you’re located, but it’s only 9:27 in Los Angeles! ha!
